Original Oil on Canvas by Christopher Rowland

depicting a young boy in a feather headdress. Signed lower left. Image measures 23 1/2" x 17 1/2" in gold wood frame with linen inset. Christopher Rowland was born and raised on the Northern Cheyenne Reservation, at Lame Deer, Montana, which was a tough life. Rowland found his escape from his tortured youth in painting. Rowland sold his first 18" x 24" oil painting during his sophomore year in high school. That same year Rowland signed his first commercial contract to design tee-shirt logos with Bears Den of Colstrip, MT. A short few years later, at only 20 years of age, he painted his first commissioned portrait, a larger-than-life work, of the twin children of fellow Northern Cheyenne, Leroy Spang. Rowland met Jack Hines and Jessica Zemsky, his first mentors, at the Toucan Gallery in Billings, MT, in 1988. Upon seeing Rowland's work they offered him a scholarship to their two week workshop in Big Timber. Rowland was commissioned to design capital pieces for the Bronx Zoo, New York City. James Poulson and Howard Terpining became mentors and friends. Later, Terpning became one of Rowland's collectors purchasing a Rowland work at the 1998 American Miniatures Show, Settlers West Gallery, Tucson, AZ. Further recognition of his art by the Montana state government came when their Tribal Relations Report of 2006 featured Rowland oils on the front and back covers, as well as throughout the 70-page report. Rowland's artwork, both visual and audio, creates a peaceful and tranquil environment for everyone to enter and enjoy the moment, and its meaning, for their lives.

"By the time I went back to finish school, I was nineteen and overage for the school near home," he recalls. "All the kids seemed young. Instead, I went to the old Indian School in Santa Fe, the one founding by Dorothy Dunn. I was the only art school an Indian could afford to go to in those days, because it was free." Grandson of the Apache chief who was Geronimo's interpreter, Houser had to "drop out of high school to help with the farm." In Santa Fe from 1936 to 1938, he was the only Indian working in sculpture. He also painting murals in Washington, D.C., exhibited in the 1939 New York World's Fair, and had a one-person show at the Museum of New Mexico. During World War II, he lived in California and worked as a factory hand and ditch digger, but in 1948 he won a sculpture competition at the Haskell Institute in Kansas and modeled his first eight-foot stone monument. In 1949, Houser received a Guggenheim fellowship. He began teaching in Indian schools in 1951, was awarded the Palmes d'Academique by France in 1956 for contributions to Indian art, and retired from teaching in 1975, "a long time for somebody who had wanted to free lance. You never think of getting old. Sometimes I lie awake all night, thinking o the new project for the next morning. I want it to tingle my back when I look at it." Houser's sculpture is in six museums, he was written up in Artists of the Rockies, April 1979, and Southwest Art, June 1981.

Lithograph by Joe De Yong

"Crow Woman" 21/50 signed lower right. Image measures 6 1/8"x 4 7/8" with a single mat in a gold and natural wood frame. A painter and sculptor of Indian and western subjects, Joe De Yong was born in Webster Grove, Missouri, and was raised in Indian territory. As a teenager he learned fancy roping from Will Rogers and earned his living as a cowboy including working with Tom Mix in making westerns. De Yong had deafness due to childhood spinal meningitis and became an expert at Indian sign language. As an artist, he was primarily self taught, and his greatest influence was Charles Russell during the time he worked in Russell's studio from 1916 to 1926 in Montana. Russell and his wife became very close to De Yong and treated him like a member of the family, and after Russell's death in 1926, De Yong became his "artistic heir and guardian of his creative legacy". (Hassrick, 146). Through the Russells, De Yong became friends with Howard Eaton, whose family had ranches in Yellowstone and Glacier National Parks, and because of this connection De Yong spent much time painting in these locations, going first to Yellowstone in 1920. He later moved to California where he worked as a technical advisor in the movie industry and lived in Pasadena and Santa Barbara.

Cathy has spent her lifetime participating in the ceremonies and cultural life-ways of relatives on the Cheyenne River Reservation and refining her skills in the sacred art of porcupine quillwork “Maintaining these traditional arts is imperative as they are a part of our American heritage in danger of being lost. Not only are they beautiful and useable, but when made with integrity, they are imbued with power & spiritual meaning.” Cathy lectures on the art & culture of the Western Plains at museums and events, from the Smithsonian to Christy’s in NYC. She has consulted on a majority of the Western genre films (Dances with Wolves) of the past 20 years and exhibited at the National Cowgirl Museum & Hall of Fame and the Charlie Russell Show, among others. He also learned to read and write and worked in the movies as an extra and painted a relief map of California. In later years and before 1940, he settled in the Tucson area as a rancher and painter of western subjects, and he also did illustration for Literary Digest, which earned him membership in the Society of Illustrators. -askART

Original Watercolor on Paper by Mark Silversmith

depicting Native Americans on horseback galloping through a river, signed lower right. Image measures 7"x22" with triple mat and rustic wood frame. Born on the Navajo Reservation in 1954, Mark Silversmith comes from a family of silversmiths. After graduating from Southwestern Oklahoma State at Weathorford, OK, Mark taught art and industrial art classes to elementary and middle school students at the BIA school, Dzilth-na-o-dith-hle, south of Bloomfield, NM. He followed this with a B.A. degree from Southwestern Oklahoma State University and taught junior high school for seven years. He then turned professional artist and in 1982 married Barbara, who is also now his agent. Silversmith studies all North American Indian tribes for their culture and traditions in preparation for his paintings. Since the different tribes traded among each other sometimes the subjects in his paintings may be dressed in the breastplate of one tribe and wearing another article of clothing or beads from another tribe. It is Mark Silversmith's belief that all tribes have a common bond.
