Limited Edition Print by Donald Crowley

"Security Blanket" 348/1500 hand signed in pencil lower right. Image measures "13 1/4x9 1/4". Print only with information on the artist in a Greenwich Workshop folio. The eloquence of a Don Crowley painting is not in its re-creation of history, but in its vision of the living. A consummate realist, Don can paint the beauty and dignity of an Apache maiden, the spiritual countenance of an Indian dancer or a quiet still life with equal skill and passion. The Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles was his training ground, and is also where he met his wife, B.J., whom he credits as his most discerning critic. After art school, he spent 23 years in New York as a commercial illustrator with the Charles E. Cooper Studio. In 1972, tired of the repetition and restrictions of commercial art and feeling the need to release his stifled creativity, he and his family moved west. Here he has been able to free his talents and delve into the engrossing world of the Apache and Paiute Indians. His paintings typify the ideals of these southwestern societies and impart to the viewer the serenity of these people and their surrounding. Don considers his election to the Cowboy Artists in 1994 his finest moment and greatest challenge.

Fine Art Print by Virgil Stephens

"Should Have Dallied" 29/100, signed in pencil lower right. Image measures 27" x 21 1/4" in double mat and rustic wood frame. Virgil C. Stephens was born in Globe, Arizona. Having no formal training in art, he has been drawing (doodlin') since he first picked up a pencil, as a wet-behind the ears kid. As time went on, he got more and more serious about "this thing called art," and was able to make it his full-time profession in 1982. "My work reflects the life-style my family and I live." In 1992, he started sculpting in clay, and now has added a line of limited- edition bronze sculptures, ranging in concept from ultra-realism to stylize. Even though Stephens has done oils and pastels, his strength is with the pencil. "No other medium captures that ultra fine detail that I enjoy producing. (Somewhere along the way I paid attention to details!) I strive to tell a story with my artwork, right down to the titles. It has to, or I will be bored, and if its boring to me to produce, it will be boring to the viewer.

Large Fine Art Bronze

by C.E. Dollin, limited edition 25/100 depicting Indian Chief giving the peace sign. Measures 39"h x 34"l x 10"w. A sculptor of Indian figures and portraits, Cyrus Dallin created work that showed Indians as having noble bearing, simplicity, dignity, and elaborate costumes. This was a departure from earlier depictions of them "as a pitiful but appealing remnant of a once-proud and noble race." (Baigell 85) He was a careful student of anatomy, costume, and psysiognomay, and his highly realistic figures made them seem natural, interesting and worth knowing as human beings. One of his major pieces is the statue of Paul Revere at Boston's Old North Church, for which he won an equestrian art contest. Another famous work is Appeal to the Great Spirit, at the Boston Museum of the Fine Arts. Other important works are in Chicago, Signal of Peace in Lincoln Park; Medicine Man in Fairmount Park in Philadelphia, and Massasoit at Plymouth, Massachusetts to commemorate the peace of 1621 between the Indians and the Pilgrims. Dallin was born in a log cabin in Springville, Utah, the son of Mormon pioneers, and he grew up near Paiute and Ute Indians, exposure which set the course of his career. As a youngster, he modeled wolves, antelope, buffalo, and other wild animals of his surroundings. In 1879, he was sponsored by Utah patrons supportive of his genius and headed for Boston to study with Truman Bartlett. On the way, he met Crow Indians that he later used as subjects. He also studied in Paris in 1880 at the Academie Julian and was further inspired to depict western subjects when he saw Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show in Paris. He sculpted Signal of Peace, the figure of an Indian, which won honorable mention as his entry in the Paris Salon. Much encouraged by this success, he did a series of sculptures on related subjects. In Paris, he also completed a statue of Lafayette. Dallin taught at Drexel Institute in Philadelphia and the Massachusetts State Normal Art School in Boston.

Original Watercolor of Paper by Dave Powell

depicting Indian on horseback in front of tipi village. Signed lower right. Image measures 4"x6 1/2" in single mat with wood fillet and wood frame. Dave Powell is a native son of Montana, in a world of change and transition; few can say they have roots in a single geography that go back four generations. Dave's pedigree in art is just about as deep. He is the son of artists Ace Powell and Nancy McLaughlin Powell. That heritage leads back to the likes of Charlie Russell and Joe De Young, both famous for their abilities to "tell the story" through their art. His father, Ace Powell, was a prolific Western artist whose first childhood paint-box set was a gift from Charlie and Nancy Russell. Dave became a serious student of art in his mid-teens, and has been a professional artist most of his adult life. Over the years he has worked with Bob Scriver, Ned Jacob and Robert Lougheed. Dave will be the first to give thanks and credit to CAA founder Joe Beeler for his longstanding friendship and guidance over many years. Because of his vast knowledge of the dress and habits of Western Indians, pioneers and cowboys, Dave is often called upon to provide costumes and props, and to give technical advice about authenticity for films and television. Productions he has worked on include Good Old Boys, Silverado, The Life and Times of Grizzly Adams and Lonesome Dove. His interests in historic reenactments and rides have taken him all across the West, and these travels have afforded Dave the opportunity for inspiration. While his film work utilizes his experience and observation, his sculptures, paintings and illustrations are born of his imagination. Dave and his family now reside in central Montana, just a short drive from Charlie Russell's home in Great Falls. There he is constantly inspired by the very buttes and prairies that Russell himself loved and painted.

Original Watercolor on Paper

Signed 'Eggonoffer' 1948, image size 13.5x18.5. In gold frame with matting. Depicts indians on horseback. Considered by the artist to be his finest work of Indian subjects. It was acquired by Sugn Pedersen a noted Native American artifact collector, directly from the artist in the late 1970s. Biography from Mark Sublette Medicine Man Gallery Nick Eggenhofer was one of the most popular illustrators of western story magazines and books in America from the 1920s to 1940s. Born in Gaunting, Germany, Eggenhofer grew up reading the Old West adventure novels popular in Germany at the time. As a youth, he saw the 1898 movie, Buffalo Bill's Wild West, and experienced a live Wild West show in Munich in 1909, clinching a life-long fascination with the American frontier. At age 16, Eggenhofer emigrated to New Jersey under the sponsorship of an uncle. While working at various jobs, he made drawings and paintings, and collected images of the West as reference for his art. In 1916 he began four years of night classes at the Cooper Union, and apprenticed at American Lithograph Company during the day. In 1920 Eggenhofer made his first art sale-three western watercolors-to the firm of Street and Smith, publishers of the highly popular Western Story Magazine. When a strike shut down American Lithograph, he joined the staff of Street and Smith producing pen and ink drawings for the magazine.Eggenhofer married in 1924 and the next year the couple set out in their Model T for his first trip West, visiting Santa Fe, Taos and the Grand Canyon. Eggenhofer was not disappointed with the country he had dreamed of all his life. Not surprisingly, he felt it gave his work "a new perspective, a new dimension, a new point of view." Returning East, he built a log cabin studio in Milford, New Jersey. Eggenhofer carefully researched his subjects, poring over books in libraries to ensure the accuracy of his depictions. As he became more prosperous he also collected western artifacts, a practice shared by most painters of the Old West. He was especially fascinated with modes of transportation in nineteenth century America, and sometimes built scale models of wagons in order to learn their construction. In 1961, he wrote an illustrated a book on the subject entitled, Wagons, Mules & Men: How the Frontier Moved West. Because most of his work from the 1920s through the 1940s was western story illustration, Eggenhofer became highly skilled at rendering action scenes of Indians, cowboys and outlaws. Much of his output was in ink, and these images reveal an excellent sense of design and the bold, dynamic compositions required of pulp magazine illustrations. His paintings often have more stable (even static) compositions and are intensely colored. He painted in a detailed, realistic style but with choppy strokes, often of pure color, giving the paintings a somewhat impressionist quality. He estimated that he made about 30,000 drawings and paintings for pulp magazines and novels over the course of his career.
